Another common rule is that the doubles are never placed on the diagonal. Each side of the chain must have at least five pips on it. Doubles may be counted as one, or as two.

One of the first games played with dominoes was in China, where they were called dotted cards. Unlike the European versions, Chinese dominoes have no blank faces, and each tile is made to represent each possible face of two dice. Traditionally, these were used for trick-taking games.
