The first mention of the game dates to 1716, and the modern roulette wheel was developed in the 1800s. Many different theories have been put forward to explain its origin, including the ideas of the French mathematician Blaise Pascal and a Dominican monk.

When you decide to play Roulette, the best thing to do is make a budget for your session and stick to it. Then, choose a table that allows you to bet within your set limits. Usually, each table carries a placard that indicates the minimum and maximum bets allowed. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the various types of roulette bets, which are split into two categories: outside bets and inside bets.

Outside bets, which are better for beginners, place your chips on a category of numbers rather than specific ones. They include bets on the color red or black, whether the number is odd or even, and if it’s high or low. The odds for these bets are higher than those of inside bets, but the payout is lower.

To make an outside bet, simply place your chip(s) on the edge of a row of three numbers, or on the line separating them. Then, if the ball lands on any of those numbers, you win. You can also place a chip on a column, which pays out if the winning number is in that row.

Inside bets are more difficult to win, but they can still offer big rewards. To make an inside bet, place your chip(s) on a single number, or on a block of four or six consecutive numbers. If the ball lands in your bet, you’ll get paid out 1-1.

There are also a number of other bets you can place on the table. The Dozens Bet (called douzaine in French) wagers that the winning number will be in one of the first 12 numbers, the second dozen, or the third dozen. If the winning number is in any of these symmetries, you’ll receive a payout of 2-1. Another option is the Odd or Even Bet, known as impair et pair in French. This bet wagers that the winning number will be either odd or even, not including 0 or 00, and offers odds of 1:1.
